In Which We Continue on the "Love" Situation

Season 4, Episode 22
The Girl in the Mask

BRENNAN: I'm not convinced that loving someone is worth it.
BOOTH: I got a son, and it's worth it.
BRENNAN: Even if he died?
BOOTH: Whoa. Bones, don't even say anything like that. Don't even put that out there. It is worth it, and everything around it is worth it. (beat) Every moment, everything… is worth it, so eat the ice cream before it melts.
BRENNAN: (eats a spoonful of ice cream and frowns) I wish it was beer.
BOOTH: Right. (gets up and moves to his fridge) You know what? (takes two beers out of the fridge) Okay. (places the beers on the table and opens them) You're right.
BRENNAN: (takes a beer) Now, this is what I'm talking about.
BOOTH: Good. We agree to understand that this is worth it.

And we continue on the “love” situation. Bones wants to believe in love. But she's not sure it's worth it. She saw the pain Nakamura felt. She's felt the pain of abandonment by people she's loved before; she can only imagine what it would be like if they actually died, having them be in her life one moment and gone forever the next. She's felt “tinglings” of it, I like it call it, when Booth “died”. She wasn't aware or accepting of her feelings for him, of course, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist, and it doesn't mean she didn't feel something similar to someone she admits loving, dying. The thought is absolutely frightening for her.

But Booth knows it's worth it. Booth, the ultimate advocate for love on this show, or at least, to Bones, knows that it's worth it. And he tries to help her see that. That the moment, right then, with their ice cream and beer, is worth it. And this helps her understand that it is, in fact, worth it, taking her another step forward to believing in and accepting love.

And I'll leave it at that. I won't shamelessly promote the one Bones fanfiction I've ever written, inspired by this scene, a short little future speculation fiction.

No, I would never do something like that.
