In Which We Get More Love Discussions

Season 4, Episode 19
The Cinderella in the Cardboard

BOOTH: Okay, well, you know what? Sometimes love trumps logic.
BRENNAN: Love is a chemical process which causes delusion. An intellectually rigorous person would never get married.
BOOTH: Never say never.
BRENNAN: That's a paradox. It makes no sense.
SCHEER: Am I still needed here? Because if you two are having relationship issues…
BRENNAN: (grimacing) We're not a couple.
BOOTH: We just work together, that's all.

And here we further establish something we've kind of already known for awhile, but, it needs to be addressed again, because they will be elaborating on it in this episode. Bones doesn't believe in love as more than a chemical reaction. Booth does. And, of course, within this discussion, someone mistakes them for a couple.

Good times. And they shall continue.

BRENNAN: You've never married.
BOOTH: Well, I will.
BRENNAN: That's impossible to know.
BOOTH: You know what? Obviously, you have issues with this, so next time we see Sweets, you should bring it up?
BRENNAN: Sweets is having an affair with a woman who's engaged. He's hardly one to give advice.
BOOTH: You know what? You are scared. That's what it is. You're scared of love.

The only really important thing in this part is the last line. You're scared of love. Bones is scared of love. This idea becomes so freaking relevant in the 100th episode, it's ridiculous. Even though she does “believe in love” at that point, well, you can believe in love and still be scared of it. And that's just what it is. She's scared of it because she's not sure she's truly capable of it, with her “cold heart”.

BRENNAN: You know, intellectually I know that jealousy is absurd. But I see that it's real for people. (looking down) I even experience it myself.
BOOTH: So… (taking a seat) who are you jealous of?
BRENNAN: Angela. Hodgins. Cam. You.
BOOTH: Why?
BRENNAN: Because you all want to lose yourself in another person. You believe that love is transcendent and eternal. I want to believe that, too.
BOOTH: Hey, you will. I promise. Someday you will. You will someday, okay? You will.

Oh, Emotional!Brennan. Oh, Vulnerable!Brennan. You hardly ever come out. But when you do, it's so great. Because when you come out, it normally means some sort of emotional development is happening. And that is, in fact, the case this time. Bones is stating, out loud, that she wants to believe in love. Even for her to want to believe in love means a lot, because it's her wanting to believe in something “irrational”. She has acknowledged that “love” as something more than a chemical reaction is something of merit. And that, my friends, means not just another step in her emotional development, but also another step for B&B's relationship. Maybe once she believes in love, she can believe that she's in love with Booth.

  1. I think this was a pivotal moment in their relationship. It looked to me like Booth was at the end of his rope with Bones. He, and two other people tried to warn her to not tell Sweets, but she went with her head instead of his gut and told Sweets anyway. At the end, Booth is sitting in his kitchen eating cereal out of the box and pondering his relationship with Bones. He knows that she's scared of love and he doesn't believe she'll ever get over it. Especially after what the suspect said about being just what the victim asked for. Booth gives Bones a look as if to say that he is just what Bones asked for, but she can't be loved and he's wondering if he's wasting his time with her. You've got to cut the guy some slack. He's been trying for four years to get her to accept him as someone she's romantically involved with. He's made some headway in certain areas, but this is the big one. She can't/won't allow herself to be loved. There is nothing but pain for him if he stays with her. He can love her all he wants, but she'll never reciprocate. But, Bones recognizes the look Booth is giving her. She has grown because she knows what it means. She has learned from him and if she doesn't give him something, she's going to lose him forever. So she goes to his apartment unannounced. She tells him that she wants to believe in love. He promises that she will. In other words, he's back in. She showed him a door and he's taking it.

    That's my $ 0.02
