In Which THEY'RE PREGNANT WHAT

Season 6, Episode 23
The Change in the Game

So you know how with some episodes, even though there are really awesome, intriguing, cute moments throughout, they just really don't seem to matter all that much in comparison to the end?

This is the epitome of those episodes, I feel.

I have to start by saying that I was actually (unwillingly) spoiled for the end a good long while before I could watch the episode, so it was a bit of a different experience for me, watching it.

But, nonetheless, what I think about it is the same regardless of whether I had gotten spoiled or not.
BUT A COUPLE THINGS FIRST:
-The look on her face when he suggests she be his undercover girlfriend. HER FACE. She is so pleased with this idea. And the way she looks away, still smiling, when she says “ok”... this is different than any other time she's played his undercover girlfriend. And Max totally knows what's up, as always.
-Just the fact that they're happy and not arguing and Max can tell there's a difference is just so awesome. And in case there are any people being like “OH BUT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BICKER THAT'S WHAT THEY DO THEY'RE NOT THE SAME WAH!”: if you seriously think they're never going to bicker, disagree, or argue ever again, this must be like the second episode you've ever seen of this show. I just like that they're so happy right now. They have a ~thing~ going on, whatever that thing might be, we don't know, but there's a thing and they're happy with it and with each other and IT'S VERY NICE. So just let them be happy for a bit.
-Even if I hadn't been spoiled, I feel I would have guessed Brennan was pregnant the first time she was like “If Buck and I had a child...” The fact that she's already concerned with what she does and doesn't want the child to be, even before she tells Booth (or anyone, I'm assuming), is completely perfect for her character and appropriate and I am just looking forward to Mommy!Bones so much I cannot even express it.

Ok, now, done with that, we go onto the last scene.
It's kind of a big deal, kind of, I guess, maybe, kind of.

Bones is pregnant with Booth's child.

.
.
.

UH HELLO THERE REALLY BIG WHOA (horse) MOMENT.

I stay away from most online Bones fandom nowadays, but I'm sure I'm safe in assuming that there are some people up in arms about this, for a plethora of reasons. But, frankly, it doesn't really matter how any one person thinks they should have gotten together. When you get a couple that has been such a long time coming together like this, there are always going to be some people who are disappointed by the manner in which it was executed. Everyone has their own distinct ideal way they wish they would get together. But just because they don't get together the way you think they should have, it doesn't mean the way it did happen is stupid or wrong or out of character or anything along those lines.

That said, I can bet there are some people who are upset mostly because they wanted to see them as a “real couple” for awhile before this happened. But, really, they've more or less been a “real couple” for quite awhile now. Go to nearly ANY post for any episode, and I'll have noted something they did that was couple-y (or, in many cases, have a paragraph or two explaining why they are basically already a couple). It would be redundant, almost, for them to go that route, because everything would basically be the same. It is through this now where we'll get to see a new side of their relationship, a new side of them as individuals.

So, yes, I think it makes sense that TPTB went this route with the situation, and I'm SUPER happy about it, and excited to see how everything unfolds.

I have some concerns, though. Mostly about what this will mean about them working together. TPTB have found some nice loopholes in the past (the bowling team the murder victim was on was ~luckily~ the same team Max is on! How convenient!), but honestly, I'm not entirely sure how they could get away with the FBI allowing Booth and Bones to continue to work together when is the the father of the child currently in her uterus. Unless they keep it a secret from everyone, but that can only last so long. And then that delves into deeper questions – what if they do hide it? What does that mean for them? What if they don't, what if the FBI severs their partnership temporarily, or even permanently? Is it the same show if they don't work together? Is it worth it, to see them pregnant and happy together, if it means we no longer get to see them as partners? What, exactly, makes it worth it or not worth it?

Honestly, until we know how they're going to handle it, there's not much of a point delving into these questions, but I am concerned about it, and it'll be interesting to see which route TPTB take with this one, and how they go about justifying that route.

Also, the fact that we did not get to see, at the very least, the conversation/actions leading up to them deciding to have sex that night, makes me kind of sad. Note – not outraged, furious, not even actually “sad”. Just “kind of sad”. Like the way one might be if a performer they like did a show in their town and they found out about it after the fact. Vague disappointment, but nothing really affecting or lasting. I haven't read anyone else's opinions about it, but I can imagine that there might be some out there who feel we were “robbed” of getting to see the scene where they officially get together – that after all this time, we deserve at least that. And honestly, I can understand that. But, not only do you not know what will happen in the future of the show (I wouldn't be surprised at all if they had a flashback and actually have that scene either during the episode where she gives birth or the series finale, whenever that should be), but also, I think it is kind of fitting that, stylistically, TPTB decided to give their ~getting together~ little fanfare. They have seriously been through SO fucking much at this point, this has been building up for so long, that it would have been simply absurd if they never got together. It was so expected to happen, that stylistically, it makes sense the actual event wouldn't be conveyed as the be all and end all of everything ever.

(and even if we never get to see that scene, well, that is for what fanfiction was made.)

There's still one main thing we haven't gotten to yet, in regards to them getting together. We have yet to see them kiss post-both of them accepting and acknowledging their feelings for each other. We've seen them kiss in the coma dream, when they were drunk and about to have sex but didn't really know each other, when Booth couldn't hold his feelings for her in any longer but she wasn't ready to accept her feelings for him... I just, I want to see those feelings, those newly fully-embraced feelings, expressed through their physical connection. That is the ultimate for these two, because their emotional connection does so much to inform their physical connection, and vice-versa.

Speaking of which, though, remember that scene in season 2, when Bones' boyfriend sailed off into the sunset without her, and Booth showed up and was saying that someday she would eventually get made sick to her stomach by all the bodies she deals with, and she says she doesn't vomit, and he tells her to give it time, that everything happens eventually, and she says really, and he says yes, all the stuff you think never happens, it happens. You just have to be ready for it.

"Eventually" is (finally, finally, FINALLY), now.

The episode title did not lie – this is a pretty major “change in the game”. And so I encourage all fans to keep that in mind over the summer – change. The game has been changed yet again, which most likely means more changes along the way. Things will probably be different next season. Try to get used to the idea beforehand. The show has been through major changes before, and everything was fine. Keep your perspective in place.

And if that doesn't work, just remember – after going through The Plot Device Formerly Known as Hannah Burley, most anything else is a breeze.

Although I won't be posting again (most likely) until the new season, I will be checking the comments and responding to them periodically! My email is humanoid24601 at gmail dot com should you want to get in touch with me in that format.

Have a magnificent summer, every one of you.

  1. I am very happy with this episode. I just re-watched this ep, literally five minutes ago, since the shock has worn off, and I am happy as to how they wound up together. I had a conversation about this last night on Twitter, and I'm at peace about how they got together and am excited for next season. The only thing that truly annoys me is how bratty the kids are in this ep.

Also, **SPOILER** SN gave interviews to both ew.com and tvline.com which explains what the writers are thinking on how B&B got together, and it also made me feel better and more settled. I can post the links if anyone is interested in the spoiler post. See you all next fall!

  2. I was definitely one of those people who spent a good five minutes yelling, "WHAT!?!?!" at my computer screen. I would like to thank Ashley for her info up above, as my second thought (the first thought being something along the lines of "OH GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY, FINALLY!") was, "But how, since they theoretically only slept together last week?" In his interview to EW, SN points out that the time-jump was about a month, which makes me feel a little better about the timing. But then that raises a whole slew of other questions.

To my mind, Brennan is the type to be fastidious about birth control. And, as an anthropologist, she would have to recognize the huge amount of time, energy, effort, and overall sacrifice that goes with bringing a child into the world. I struggle with reconciling the suddenness of their relationship with the fact that they decided to make a baby. Because there had to be some sort of conversation about it. And the only way I could see them setting sail and deciding to procreate in one fell swoop would be if Brennan, testing her new powers of social conversation, one day asked, "Would you be adverse to reproducing with me?" and Booth said, "Sure" in that guy way that means, "Maybe someday in the future, but not right now."

But then he smiled at the end. Was that just because it's the idea of being a father, especially with a woman he loves? Or did they actually have a sit-down conversation about it?

Or - and it's entirely possible - I am simply reading far too much into it than TPTB intended me to.

    What say you, Leila?

  3. Ashley: Oh man, yes, those links would be appreciated!

Kristine: In my opinion, I highly doubt they sat down and talked about it. Ever since Brennan decided she wanted a kid in the season 4 finale, that window has been open. Yes, it went down on her priority list after Booth's brain tumor happened, but she didn't actively decide that she didn't want a child anymore, or anything like that. While Brennan definitely would be the type to be fastidious about birth control, I wonder if she's even on it now. From what we've seen on the show, she hasn't really had much sex for awhile, and while you can't go entirely on the fact that you can't be entirely sure she hasn't just by the fact that we haven't seen evidence on the show, it would be safe to assume that she hasn't for at least a few months, probably not since before The Doctor in the Photo, because that experience was so altering to her. And plus, you never really know, it might have been the one time she forgot it, or they could just use the "birth control isn't 100% effective" excuse. Either way, judging by his reaction, and the fact that she specified "You're the father", it makes most sense to me that the pregnancy happened unplanned that night, and the birth control issue is just a discrepancy TPTB decided to ignore.

  5. Hi,

Thankyou for another wonderful post. I have just watched this for the 3rd time, I feel that TPTB have handled them getting together well.
When it happened last week, and Bone's reaction with Angela, I felt that's a perfect way to have them together and yet keep the ...whatever their magic is.

For this weeks ep I wasn't spoiled and so the end was a shock. I loved it.

As for other web sites. I lurk, I did used to post, but now I read a few posts then give up. since I am not a true hard core fan and therefore not incredibly angry at how I have been cheated by the way they got them getting together I don't really feel I can post. Also I do feel that there is a lot of Booth hate going on.

I thought your summarising of their likely reaction was very funny and accurate.

The Change in the game, bring on season 7.

  6. lovely review as always Leila, I cried my eyes out during that birth scene, where Angela and Hodgins told each other what they loved about each other the most.. that was so real and so beautiful that it makes me tear up even now thinking about it...srsly, TJ and Michaela played it so amazingly well, im a tiny bit disappointed more of a deal hasnt been made over that one little scene, course, with the bombshell that was dropped I can see why it got ignored by most reviewers

I have faith in this show, and while im a little frightened about how they will go with this storyline, ive stuck with this show for so long now, I'll keep watching next season!

I look forward to chatting and reading your reviews for season 7 in september!!

  7. Grace: I don't even think it's a matter of being a "hardcore" fan or not. I just think a lot of people get way too carried away if things don't go EXACTLY. LIKE. THEY. WANT. THEM. TO. and it's just silly, honestly.

Dani: I totally cried during the birth scene too. I was so happy for them :)

  8. "UH HELLO THERE REALLY BIG WHOA (horse) MOMENT."
    ^ I laughed a lot at that. :)

And can I just add, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was totally shocked!!! Is it September yet?!?!

Thanks for the great review, as always. I can't wait for season 7! I, for one, am very pleased with this development. I'm a teensy bit apprehensive about having two baby plots so close together, but I have faith in TPTB to continue to make Bones amazing.

See you all next fall! =)

  9. Oh, and also - I love baby Hodgela's name. Or baby Michael, I should say. I thought the birth scenes were very well done, hats off to Michaela Conlin for terrific acting. And I'm very happy they had a healthy baby. I cried too.

  10. I totally agree, If it doesn't go how they want it to go its failed. Its sad.

Its why I love your blog, its analysis is so good and reasonable. Its makes me rewatch with a new view and I see things in a different way, but in a good way!! lol!

I'm so going to miss this over the summer!!!

  11. The clock set to 4:47 has been something I've questioned for a long time, and I've come up with my own explanation for it. When the time is "solid", they are one and in sync with eachother. At the end of season 5, it was flashing, like they were out of sync. Then, in this episode, they are in sync again. They made love, and they're going to have a baby and a family and be together.

Something else that interests me that could be tied to the clock a little is from the scenes from the coma episode at the end of season four. You know, the ones where they make love at the beginning of the episode and when she tells him that she's pregnant at the end of the episode. They could very well be the continuations of the major scenes in the last two episodes. Especially since at the end when Angela says "It was a dream" it made me think that that wasn't unintentional. TPTB wanted us to look at the season four coma episode for the parts that people said were missing from the last two episodes.

When Booth and Brennan are lying in bed, I can picture her saying "Do you love me?" and Booth saying "Yeah, do you want me to prove it to you?" while the scene goes on from there.

When Brennan tells Booth that she's pregnant, and he's the father, right after that smile in both scenes, I can picture him saying "No, YEAH???", then kissing her and continuing that scene.

Something else I just noticed in this episode... When they first walk into the bowling rink ;) and Max tells them to act like a couple, Bones grabs Booth's arm. Same as in the last episode, same in episode 100 at the end. To me, that seems to be the way she shows affection to him. Of course, I may be reading too much into that, but it's, as Sweets would say, "interesting."

Another observation. When she is introducing herself to the "tornado", she's introduced as his girlfriend, but she says she is his fiance to be. It's funny, because in episode 2-8, she is trying to get as far away from being anything meaningfull to him (first, wife, then fiance, then a loosly committed couple), and now when they decided on girlfrind, that's not enough for her. She wants more. Which makes me think that next season she won't be as against marriage as she has been in the past. She is having his child and I believe she wants them to be together in the next 30 or 40 or 50 years. She's not against the piece of paper and she would do it for him.

I don't think next season will be as "easy" as I would like it to be for them. From what I've seen over the last six years, I would not be surpised if there was a "Return of Hannah" some time during the season just to shake things up a bit. Nothing in this relationship has ever been easy for them, why would it be that way now? I hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling HH isn't done screwing with us yet.

  12. Geo: I really dig that idea about the time flashing/being in and out of sync. Next time I rewatch the serious I'm going to look out for that.

Ooooh, I didn't catch that "it was a dream" part but that makes SO much sense. Oh MAN, TPTB are such clever little bastards sometimes. The continuations idea makes sense, not sure if it's quite as concrete but without a doubt those scenes definitely are paralleled with each other.

Something tells me she also grabbed his arm like that a bunch the first time they were undercover as a couple, in the underground fight one. It's definitely at the very least a recurring body language gesture with her. Perhaps it started as a "this is how I show that I'm WITH him when we're undercover" she did when she played the part of his girlfriend undercover and eventually, as they got closer and closer, she did it as herself out of habit. Definitely an interesting idea in thinking about their partnership in work and their partnership romantically and how they overlap and influence each other.
